In the heart of Glebe, a beloved literary institution has undergone a remarkable metamorphosis. This heritage-listed Italianate Victorian building, with its distinctive hipped roof and timber frame, has been meticulously restored and expanded to create a vibrant cultural hub.
Architectural Approach
Iceberg collaborated with the owners and AN+A Architects, adopting a three-pronged strategy, focusing on:
1. Heritage preservation
2. Hospitality integration
3. Retail innovation
The existing structure has been carefully restored, maintaining its historical integrity while adapting to modern needs. A sculptural rear extension now houses a licensed café, and a first-floor function space serving both the public and no doubt what will become a launchpad for countless literary works.
Design Philosophy
Working in close collaboration with Gleebooks’ owners and senior staff, the design team crafted an interior that is both playful and sophisticated. The fit-out embodies the spirit of inclusivity and accessibility that Gleebooks is known for, creating a welcoming atmosphere for book lovers of all backgrounds.
Innovative Details
The design draws inspiration from the very objects it houses:
– Curved elements reminiscent of book spines
– Concrete edge details in the rear laneway mimicking the micro-stepping of an open book’s pages
– Plywood bookshelves, chosen for their layered construction echoing the pages of a book
A Thoughtful Transformation
